Counselling is most effective when there is no prior relationship or connection with the individual seeking help. This is because sometimes we may feel hesitant to share personal details with our family and friends. We might fear their reaction, worry about them not understanding, or be reluctant to admit our struggles to our loved ones. Counsellors offer a safe space for open communication and attentive listening to understand your situation. This uninterrupted space allows you to process your thoughts and emotions, while counsellors provide support and guidance. In contrast, interactions with friends and family members may lack the same level of listening space, as they often try to offer solutions and fix problems out of care and concern. As a person-centred counsellor, I believe individuals are the experts of their own lives. so, providing a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts and feelings will empowering you to understand yourself better and improve your mental well-being.
